It was released in 1981 by record label Park Avenue. The album marked a distinctive change in the band's sound. Compared to its predecessor, Is This Real, which was composed mostly of raw, sleek and relatively traditional songs, Youth of America featured much longer and complex compositions the title track alone clocks in at over 10 minutes. According to frontman Greg Sage, this change of pace was a deliberate counter. Youth of America is the second studio album by American punk rock band Wipers. Punk 1981. of America is the second studio album by Wipers. The album was released in 1981 by Park Avenue, who also released the bands studio debut, Is This Real. Restless Records reissued the album in 1990, and Sages own Zeno Records released the album again in 2001 as part of the Wipers Box Set. Jackpot Records reissued the album one more time in 2007. In comparison to the tight, compact song structures of the first album, Youth of America is almost prog-rock by comparison, with some tracks clocking in at over ten minutes. According to Greg Sage, this was done intentionally to buck the punk roc. A grizzly, furious beast of a 30-minute record, Youth of America saw Greg Sage and his Wipers lengthening some of their material to very unfashionable lengths many a hardcore punk band of the time could tuck a dozen songs about Reagan and fisticuffs inside the title track alone. At his peak, the Wipers' Greg Sage could evoke the grey winter skies and rain soaked streets of the bands hometown Portland with a flick of his amp switch, channeling themes ranging from social alienation to alien abduction and wrapping them in a haze of paranoid imagery and blistering guitar playing that was virtually unrivalled in punk circles at the time. When the final notes of album closer When Its Over come through the speakers its easy to see why the Wipers influence resonated deep into the US underground and beyond, even if Greg Sage remains an underappreciated figure.
