An older, more mature version of the Rickie Lee Jones I grew up with, but still fresh and original. While lacking some of the irrepressible energy of her early work, Chuck E's in Love, Danny's Allstar Joint and others, it still has a sense of humor and optimism. Wild Child is a reprise of The Horses recorded 20 years later. While The Horses was a lullaby to her then one year old daughter. The first track, Wild Child, is a celebration of her 21st birthday. Pride and love permeate both songs, one for a child, one for a young adult stepping into the world.

There are several stand out songs, Old Enough, a clever duet with Ben Harper. A country song, Remember Me, that would do justice to Dolly Pardon, but one song stands apart, His Jeweled Crown, a mystical hymn to an afterlife. There's not bad track on the album but this one deserves a careful listen. Rickie combines all her musical, creative and technical talents to create something wholly original. The vocal arrangement is haunting, seductive and hypnotic. It's a song you won't forget.

I'm especially fond of this album, the first new work of hers that I've heard in 15 years. After 10 or 20 listens it has penetrated my heart. If you are a Rickie fan give it a listen. If you're not, I recommend you to start with her first two albums, Rickie Lee Jones and Pirates and work your way forward or just jump straight into this one. You're in for an audio surprise.
