The album contains the concert at Tokyo's Budokan on April 17, 1996 that was to be the very last performance by fellow Chic member Bernard Edwards who died the following day. The concert was a celebration of the Chic legacy and featured an all-star line-up with guest appearances by Sister Sledge, Slash from Guns N' Roses and Steve Winwood and was released three years after its recording. On his website, Rodgers explains that the song originated from a session for Sister Sledge and was titled after discovering the body of Chic co-founder Bernard Edwards, who died in 1996 following one of the bands concerts in Japan. I said, Now, I can be there for you in death, the way you were there for me in life,' he writes. The March 20th release for Ill Be There was strategic, tying into the vernal equinox. The other was Live at the Budokan, a gem that was recorded in Tokyo, Japan in April 1996 for the JT Super Producers series. Sadly, this concert would be Edwards' last live appearance before his death, and for that reason, Budokan would be historically important even if Chic had given a mediocre performance that night.
