To be fair, once the all too familiar opening strains of Dueling Banjos pass by, the song shifts almost into a completely different structure, becoming quite complex and mesmerizing. While the title track did in fact become a fairly sizable hit pushing the album to gold status the same year the real treasures are the rest of the songs. They all crackle with an energy and speed that remains faithful to tradition and still manages to not sound too flashy. When Deliverance made Dueling Banjos a smash in '72, the tune was united with Weissberg's 1963 New Dimensions in Banjo and Bluegrass LP for a new release. Other than that song and its B-side this album is actually an old Elektra album by Eric Weissberg and Marshall Brickman, the same Marshall Brickman who went on to write scripts with Woody Allen for Mr. Allen's movies. As a whole this is a very good but not great bluegrass album. The film version was performed by Eric Weissberg on 5-string banjo and Steve Mandell on acoustic guitar. Weissberg and Mandell were folk musicians from New York City, but their musical inspiration was the Bluegrass sound of Appalachia. Weissberg had been playing in folk bands since the '50s, and was a popular studio musician who played on Judy Collins' albums. The Dillards version of this song that gained popularity in the '60s was titled Duelin' Banjo, which makes more sense, as there's only one banjo in the song. The WeissbergMandell version used in the movie was retitled Dueling Banjos. This song has been used in TV commercials for Toyota and Mini Cooper. Duelling Banjos was arranged and performed for the movie Deliverance by Eric Weissberg and Steve Mandell and was included on the soundtrack Weissberg Dies: Arranger & Player On Dueling Banjos Song From Deliverance Was 80.
