Pulling influence from equal parts of the best of the last few years of what post-hardcore has had to offer, Being Without takes the familiar guise of screamed vocals mixed with slightly off key cleans and big melodies and wraps them in the shimmering sheen of the most recent fix of screamo wave bands. While the cleans in songs such as An Absent Crown, My Diadem are perfectly set with the brooding atmosphere of the track, when transferred over to a track like In Blight and Boast the result is not as pleasant as the intended harmony is more of a distraction than anything else. You've always said that this should be a sanctuary and I know you've kept your word. As I find my actions falling short, I'll keep the lessons I have learned. These streets remain so familiar, memories lingering in their quiet, bewildering nature. Beneath my feet are the crumbled remains of fall growing colder. It is one of the few Smokey Robinson solo albums that have been released in the CD format. It features the million-selling, Gold-certified single title track Being With You, which hit 1 on the Cash Box Top 100. It just missed the 1 Pop position in Billboard, peaking at 2, making it Robinson's highest-charting solo hit after leaving The Miracles. It was also 1 for five consecutive weeks on the R&B Chart and for two weeks on the UK. Barrow and Utley are in the studio of Barrows record label, Invada, scuttling around drinking coffee and fiddling with a new synthesiser. Despite there being 15 years between them, they have a funny, sweary, fraternal camaraderie. Review : Barrow - Being Without. External image. Summary : Barrow have created an album that is both refreshingly original yet unashamed of channelling its influences. Being Without is a difficult release to pigeon-hole. Gone are the days where an album is clearly ambient drone, or clearly post-punk revival, or clearly whatever other sub genre you wish to imagine or invent. Bands like North Carolina quartet Barrow have to make it difficult on us reviewers, taking elements from various genres and fusing them together to create something entirely different altogether
